Our Mission
To make the knowledge and practice of traditional Japanese home maintenance accessible to every household — with guides that are clear, accurate, and genuinely useful in daily life.
Who We Are
Axis Core Editorial (アクシスコア編集部) is an independent publishing operation based in Meguro, Tokyo. Founded in 2021, we produce written guides covering the care, maintenance, and restoration of traditional Japanese residential spaces — with particular expertise in Shoji screen repair and Tatami mat maintenance.
Our editorial team combines backgrounds in traditional craft, interior architecture, and practical home care. We work with tatami craftspeople (tatami-ya), Washi paper specialists, and experienced homeowners to ensure every guide we publish reflects real, tested knowledge.
Why Traditional Japanese Rooms?
The washitsu (Japanese-style room) represents one of the world's most refined domestic environments — balancing beauty, function, and a direct connection to natural materials. Yet as these rooms age and the traditional tradespeople who once maintained them become harder to find, many owners feel uncertain about caring for Shoji screens and Tatami mats correctly.
Our guides exist to bridge that gap. We believe these living traditions deserve to be maintained, and we believe that clear, respectful information empowers homeowners to care for them with confidence.
Our Editorial Standards
Every guide we publish follows these principles:
- Accuracy first: All techniques are verified against traditional practice and tested by our editorial team before publication.
- Safety conscious: We flag risks clearly and never recommend methods that could damage irreplaceable materials.
- Clear language: We write for people who are doing these tasks for the first time, not for professionals.
- Honest about limits: We always tell you when a task requires a professional craftsperson rather than encouraging you to proceed with something beyond safe DIY scope.
Our Location
We are based in the Meguro district of Tokyo — a neighbourhood with a strong connection to traditional Japanese craft and architecture. Our editorial office is at:

Rooted in Tradition
Our guides respect the centuries-old craft traditions behind Tatami and Shoji, not just the practical outcomes.
Carefully Verified
Every technique we publish has been tested and cross-referenced with practicing craftspeople before publication.
Gentle & Sustainable
We prioritise methods that are kind to natural materials, people, and the environment — avoiding harsh chemicals wherever possible.
